A conservatory can look bright and inviting on a viewing day, then become the room everyone avoids when the sun is low. So, how much glare do you get through a normal conservatory roof? Usually, enough to make screens difficult to see, create harsh reflections on tables and floors, and leave you squinting at certain times of day. The exact level depends on the roof material, direction of the room, time of year and how much direct sunlight reaches the glass.

A normal glazed conservatory roof is designed to bring daylight in. That is its attraction, but it also means there is very little between you and direct sunlight. Without purpose-made shading, glare can be a daily problem rather than an occasional inconvenience.

What glare feels like in a normal conservatory

Glare is more than a bright room. It is the uncomfortable intensity of light that makes it hard to relax, work, watch television or use a laptop. In a conservatory, it often arrives from above as well as from the sides, which makes standard curtains and side-window blinds only part of the answer.

On a clear summer day, a south-facing or west-facing conservatory can receive strong direct light for hours. The sun may reflect off pale flooring, glass tables, kitchen worktops and television screens. Even on brighter overcast days, the large glazed area can produce a washed-out, over-lit feel.

Winter glare can be just as frustrating. The sun sits lower in the sky, shining straight through the side glazing and roof at the exact angle that catches your eyes, screens and seating area. This is why homeowners often notice glare most when they are trying to use the conservatory as a home office, dining room or everyday living space.

How much glare do you get through a normal conservatory roof?

There is no single percentage that applies to every roof, but an unshaded glass or polycarbonate roof allows a substantial amount of visible daylight into the room. When the sun is directly overhead or angled towards the roof, that light can be intense. Roof glazing covers a wide surface area, so even modern units with solar-control properties do not remove the need for shading where comfort is the priority.

Polycarbonate roofs can make glare feel particularly sharp because the light is diffused but still powerful. You may not always see a clear beam of sunlight, yet the room can feel bright enough to cause eye strain and reflections. Clear or lightly tinted glass roofs tend to offer a clearer view of the sky, but they can also allow direct sun to strike furniture, screens and people below.

Modern performance glass can reduce some solar gain and UV transmission. It is a worthwhile feature, especially in a new conservatory, but it does not give you control over changing light conditions. The midday sun in June, a low winter sunset and a bright spring morning all behave differently. A fixed roof alone cannot be adjusted when the light becomes uncomfortable.

The factors that make glare better or worse

The direction your conservatory faces is usually the biggest influence. South-facing rooms receive the strongest sun through much of the day, especially from late morning to mid-afternoon. West-facing conservatories are often pleasant in the morning but can become difficult to use later in the day when low afternoon and evening sun floods the room. East-facing rooms tend to have the reverse issue, with strong morning glare.

North-facing conservatories generally receive less direct sunshine, but they are not glare-free. Bright skies can still create reflections, particularly on screens and glossy surfaces. Nearby buildings, light-coloured paving, water and conservatory doors can also bounce light back into the room.

The roof design matters too. A Victorian or Edwardian roof has multiple sloping panels, each catching light at a different angle. A lean-to roof may receive concentrated sun if it faces the right direction. Roof lanterns bring welcome daylight into extensions, but their overhead position can create glare directly where you want to sit, cook or work.

Your interior choices can amplify the problem. White walls, polished tiles, glass furniture and pale worktops reflect more light around the room. Darker finishes absorb more, but they can make the space feel heavier once daylight drops. Good shading lets you keep the interior style you want without accepting uncomfortable brightness.

Why glare and heat usually arrive together

Glare is often the first sign that a conservatory is receiving too much solar energy. When sunlight is strong enough to make you squint, it is also likely to be warming the glass, furniture and air inside the room. That can leave you closing doors to the conservatory, moving chairs away from the brightest spots or relying on fans and open windows to make the space usable.

The two problems are connected, but they are not identical. A room can feel hot even when the sun is behind cloud, and it can suffer from low-angle glare during a cool winter afternoon. The most effective solution considers both light and heat rather than treating them as separate issues.

Purpose-made conservatory shading works by intercepting direct light before it spreads around the room. The aim is not to make the conservatory dark. It is to soften harsh sunlight, reduce reflections and give the room a calmer, more balanced level of daylight.

The best choice depends on your roof shape, how you use the room and whether you want shading to remain in place all year. Pleated conservatory roof blinds are a familiar option and can be made to fit individual roof panels. They offer a neat, fitted appearance and give useful control over overhead light, although a larger roof can require several blinds and operating systems.
